Which Class Should I Choose?

Tile Talk · Mahj House Austin

If you’ve been circling Mahj House for a while — watching the tables fill up on Instagram, hearing a friend rave about her Tuesday game, wondering if you’d ever be able to keep up — this one’s for you.

Here’s the thing we tell every single person who walks through our door for the first time: you don’t have to know anything. Not the tiles, not the rules, not what a “Bam” is or why anyone would yell “Mahjong!” across a room. That’s our job. Yours is just to show up.

Mahjong can look intimidating from the outside. All those tiles, the fast hands, the card full of numbers and symbols that reads like a secret language. But there’s a real path from “I have no idea what I’m doing” to “this is my table, these are my people.” We’ve watched hundreds of y’all walk it. Let us show you exactly how it goes.

01Learn the Game

New here? Start with a Beginner Bootcamp — and you’ve got two ways to do it.

This is where everyone begins, and there’s no such thing as being behind. Both of our beginner options take you from “I have no idea what a Bam is” to confidently playing a full hand of American mahjong. They’re taught in a small group (max 12), no experience needed, no partner required, and your official NMJL 2025 card (a $15 value) is included so you walk out ready to play. The only real difference is the pace — so pick the one that fits your life.

Beginner Bootcamp meets twice in the same week, two hours each session. This is the classic, take-your-time version. Splitting it across two days gives everything room to breathe — you learn the tiles and the basics in session one, sleep on it, then come back and build real hands in session two. If you’re brand new and want the fundamentals to actually sink in, this is your track.

Beginner Bootcamp: The Fast Track covers all the very same material in one 3-hour session — just condensed, with more hands-on play time packed in. This is the one for people short on time, who love to learn by diving straight in, or (let’s be honest) who just got invited to a game next week and need to be ready yesterday. Same finish line, quicker sprint.

Not sure which is right for you? If you have the time, we gently nudge first-timers toward the two-session Bootcamp — mahjong sticks better when it has a beat to settle. But if your calendar (or your upcoming game night) is calling, the Fast Track will absolutely get you there. Either way, you will not be the only nervous one in the room. Promise.

02Practice with Support

Finished a Bootcamp? Two ways to build your confidence.

✦ New Class

Mahj 102: Building the Foundation. You’ve learned the rules — now let’s make them stick. Our brand-new Mahj 102 is the bridge between knowing how mahjong works and actually being able to play it. Over two instructor-led hours, you’ll reinforce the things that trip up new players: reading the card with confidence, building smarter hands, calling tiles, and moving through the Charleston without second-guessing yourself. It’s built for Bootcamp grads and anyone who has the basics but wants the reps — the class that turns hesitation into instinct.

Guided Play. This is the step people skip and then wish they hadn’t — because this is where it clicks. Guided Play is real games with a coach in the room (two hours, snacks included). You play actual hands, ask the questions that come up mid-game (“wait, can I do that?”), and build confidence without the pressure of keeping up with seasoned players. Think of it as training wheels you actually enjoy — you’re not being tested, you’re being cheered on.

Ready to play? Come to Open Play.

Once the game feels like second nature, All-Levels Open Play is your standing invitation. Pull up a chair, meet new friends, and settle into the rhythm of the game. No lesson, no coach — just tiles, good company, and a couple of hours that are entirely yours.

This is the part nobody warns you about: the game is the reason you come, and then the people become the reason you stay. Open Play is where Mahj House stops being a place you visit and starts being a place you belong.

04Host & Elevate

Love the game? Make it your thing.

Here’s where it goes from hobby to lifestyle. Rent a table and bring your own group, join a Fall League for six weeks of friendly competition, or sharpen up with an Advanced Lesson or Tournament Prep when you’re ready to compete. Some of our regulars run home game nights now. Some throw birthday parties around a mahjong table. Some just can’t stop talking about it (we relate).

At this point, mahjong isn’t something you do — it’s part of who you are. And we’re right here for all of it, from your first table to your fiftieth.

The only wrong move is not starting.

Nobody arrives at Step 4. Everybody starts at Step 1 — nervous, unsure, convinced everyone else already gets it. They don’t, and then they do, and one day you look up and you’re the one making it look easy. Pick your pace and grab a spot — we’ll see you at the table.
